Elementor website builder helps you create and edit WordPress websites, landing pages, themes, layouts, headers, footers, etc. It features a drag-and-drop interface, making it accessible to non-tech-savvy users.

Although popular, the Elementor page builder has limited customization options. Some of its competitors provide more design templates and content elements to work with. Also, users on popular review websites report that Elementor updates sometimes cause website performance issues. These are some reasons why web designers and website owners seek alternatives.

Elementor alternatives: The evaluation parameters

We've evaluated the top five Elementor alternatives based on the following criteria to help you make an informed decision for your next project:

 1. User rating
 2. What makes this website builder unique
 3. Integrations
 4. Customer support
 5. Pros
 6. Cons
 7. Pricing

We also evaluated how well they streamline website development, their features, and whether they improve or hinder your SEO efforts.

This is not only because it's easier on developers but also more cost effective in many ways, especially when you consider how quickly websites can be built with these tools!

The post Why Businesses Are Choosing A New Type Of Agency appeared first on Visual Composer Website Builder.

Atarim Agency Summit: Why Businesses Are Choosing a New Type of Agency Blog Post

As our industry has evolved, the speed of website creation has increased massively. Not only due to page builders taking away the need to create full websites with hand-coded HTML and CSS, but also the 100 other tools and plugins created specifically for this purpose.

Need a form? No problem, there’s a plugin for it. Need to boost SEO on a website? There are 10 plugins to choose from…

This benefits both the agency providing their services and the clients who are paying for it.
In this post, we’re going to take a look at why no-code solutions have become the new standard that businesses are looking for, how agencies and web creators can adapt to this, and how even marketing-oriented agencies can bolt on website creation to their services with a brand new workflow.

Why Businesses Love No-Code Solutions (Without Knowing It)

No-code solutions are great for small businesses that would like to implement their own website or app, but neither have the budget to hire an expert or an inhouse team to build it.

But as a business owner yourself, I’m sure you feel that you never have enough time to do anything other than what you are doing day-to-day, so even learning a no-code solution can be difficult for our clients. Not only that, they have to learn a lot more to get to a level that would produce a website or app that is of the standard that is expected from an expert.

When an expert is given a no-code solution, it speeds up their work massively and this is the effect the clients feel; which is why they love no-code solutions, almost without even realizing it. If you are a good designer or web creator, instead of spending your time coding it, no-code solutions allow you to realize it way faster.

From the business’ point of view, they’ve hired you for a shiny new website and you’ve done it in such a short amount of time, there is no way that when they need their next site, they are going to go for an agency that uses a coded solution.

Learn more about the added value of no-code/low-code website development

How You Can Adapt To A No-Code Solution

If you are an agency creating websites purely from custom code, unless this is due to your client’s need for a very specific kind of function, there is no better time to migrate your processes to a no-code solution.

There are many solutions to choose from, Visual Composer is just one of many examples (if you’re looking down the WordPress route), where you can create entire page layouts in literally seconds with drag-and-drop.

To get started, we highly recommend redesigning your own website using a no-code solution, and upgrading to that amazing design you’ve always wanted, but never had the time to execute.

How Marketing-Oriented Agencies Take Advantage Of No-Code Solutions

If you are an agency purely providing marketing solutions to your clients, then you already have a good grasp of what your client expects in terms of the visuals you are providing and what they want to achieve.

No-code solutions enable you to easily bolt on website creation into your service offering. What’s the point of creating paid ads for your clients if the website they are getting taken to is not fit for purpose?

And this is exactly the angle you should be taking when adding this service to your agency. You can provide the ads that are going to get them conversions, but you can get them even more by creating the entire conversion path with a new website.

Here are things you can start doing right now:

 1. Research different no-code solutions for website creation and find one that fits best for you, by giving them a test and building your own agency website with them.
 2. Offer no-code web development to one of your existing clients who you are doing marketing for, a client where you know what they need and you can execute on it fast.

 3. Sign up to the Atarim Digital Summit to hear our Product Manager, Raitis, discuss this in detail and show you exactly how you can create a website process that you can easily add to your business.

Conclusion

No-code solutions are definitely here to stay, as they become more feature-rich, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify a coded solution.

There are tons of platforms and tools out there to help you get the job done, finding the one that works best for you is paramount, as you want to be able to churn out brand new websites for your clients quickly. Not only increasing the amount of work you can take on, which in turn will help you earn more but also giving a better service to your clients, making them come back for more and giving you even more referrals.

If you want to learn more about how no-code solutions can help your business, we strongly recommend securing a spot at the upcoming Atarim Digital Agency Summit, where our Product Manager, Raitis, will be diving deep into this topic for his session.

You don’t want to miss it, secure your spot for free.

Did you know there are people who devote their whole lives to knowing typography? Steve Jobs once said in a speech that typography plays a major part in influencing how he perceives the world. And he’s certainly not alone.

Typography — i.e. how the written text looks and feels — affects all of us in both obvious and subtle ways. The way that text appears on web pages, apps, product packaging, advertisements, and more are all essential to the design's success and also a primary means of interaction. All other things being equal, a good font choice can easily make a project stand out.

Fortunately, there are thousands of different free fonts for commercial use that you can discover online, so there’s no need to reinvent Helvetica when you have access to so many great alternatives.

Take a look at some amazing free fonts that will help you create amazing projects, whether you're designing websites, applications, marketing materials, etc.

Font and Typeface

Historically, the terms “font” and “typeface” are two different things. Many people use the terms interchangeably nowadays, which is technically wrong. They imply typefaces in most cases when individuals are referring to fonts.

A typeface can be described as the collective name of a group of associated fonts (like Times New Roman, generally), whereas the font refers to the specifically chosen style, width, and weight of a typeface (like Times New Roman in Bold at 14px).

There are a large number of free commercial use fonts available. The modern fonts usually depict a single typeface style. This includes slant, weight, variation, etc. but may also contain some scalable vector data. You can render this at almost any size (although you can optimize various styles for your use at distinct dimensions).

It is important to check the End User License Agreement of any font that you download. It describes the rights of usage for free commercial fonts, and some free fonts for commercial use might include some or other conditions of use such as attributing the creator.

When it comes to cloud hosting, there’s no dearth of options available in the market - all of which are quick to swear customizable plans, maximum uptime, user-friendliness, and a score of other features they may or may not deliver. With a field growing as fast as web hosting, it takes a little extra oomph to stand out among the competition.

We checked out Cloudways, now a major player in the industry, to see how it lives up to its name. (Spoiler alert: we’re impressed enough to recommend it to all our Visual Composer users, whether you’re an agency or business owner, designer or developer, marketer or freelancer).

Let’s jump right in.

Cloudways Overview

Here’s the basic rundown off the bat: Cloudways offers managed hosting solutions with a spotlight shining bright on ease of use, choice, and performance. Activities like launching a server or application are incredibly simple to execute through 1-click operations, even for those of you who don’t have a degree in computer programming. Users get to choose between cloud providers, style of workflows, and extremely customizable hosting plans. And once you get your website running on Cloudways, the risk of your visitors seeing a 404 page all but vanishes.

In other words, the whole idea behind Cloudways is to leave the headache of server management to it, so you free up time to devote to your work instead.

What Cloudways Have Going For Them

Cloudways combines an excellent mix of features to optimize just about any site’s performance - agency, business, developer, or marketer. While it misses out on domain registration and email accounts, you’re likely to find it makes up for those in other aspects.

Ease of Use

From the get-go, it becomes quite obvious that Cloudways is explicitly designed to be easy to use. Signing up for either a 3-trial or a plan is a fast and simple process, as is creating a dedicated server. An average of ten minutes is all it takes to select the resources you need plus the server location (for best results, choose the one closest to your physical location). Installing an application is a matter of a few clicks on the user panel.

Cloudways hosting one click installation

Cloudways’ 1-click installation for WordPress websites made in Visual Composer is sure to be a major draw - it eases the whole process even for developers. As for the user panel, it has a sleek design that’s easy to navigate, and which lets you monitor your server and applications, manage security settings, scale according to your needs, and more. And then there’s also access to SSH and FTP if you need to execute more complicated tasks on the server.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Cloudways offers round-the-clock customer support through its chat option that links you directly with a customer service representative. It took no longer than 5 seconds to reach someone ready to take a question from us. We asked them about the company’s hosting plans, its payment structure, and then some slightly more technical questions about the hosting stack and security.

However, speaking to a person is a more involved process - you first have to fill out a form to request a call.

Security

According to Cloudways, it’s fully encrypted end-to-end and releases regular updates to the firmware and operating system. They also offer free SSL certificates - a must for all our e-commerce and online store operators - and all accounts come with a host of security features including firewalls, bot protection, two-factor authentication, and more.

Advanced Features

As mentioned above a few times, Cloudways uses its 1-Click operation to great effect. We especially liked how easy it was to scale server resources with just a few clicks. This is bound to be a great help whenever you experience an uptick in traffic and need to adjust your resources. Even if you’re only scaling for a week or so, like for Black Friday, their pay-as-you-go system means you’ll only be paying for the resources you consume.

Advanced features in Cloudways settings

We’re also big fans of Cloudways’ server monitoring, which makes it simple for even non-tech savvy users to monitor a number of variables like Idle CPU and incoming traffic, all in easy-to-read graph form. You can surveil RAM, CPU, bandwidth, disk storage, database, and caching services using the relevant monitoring section of the server. What’s more, Cloudways has server monitoring alerts enabled across all servers and accounts, so you remain aware of non-contact with the server before your site visitors do.

Oh, and you can set up automatic backups as often as you like, or manually back up your server with - you guessed it - one click.

Performance and Speed

Here’s where Cloudways really excels.

If you use their services, the WordPress site you make with Visual Composer will be hosted on probably the fastest WordPress hosting stack out there. Cloudways claims their uptime is 99.99%, and their loading speeds average out to 400 to 600 milliseconds. And that’s about how it worked for us.

Take a look at Visual Composer running on GTMetrix, Pingdom, and PageSpeed Insight here. We chose a Vultr server and tested a VC website on those tools.

Note: We used Cloudways managed WordPress hosting with dedicated servers and built-in cache plugins.

Part of the reason behind their performance is Cloudways’ partnership with five of the top cloud providers in the industry: Digital Cloud, Vultr, Linode, Google Cloud, and AWS. Plus, you can scale your server as your website grows and receives more traffic - all you have to do is allocate more RAM with 1-click. Those of you who spring for the Cloudways CDN will see further reduced latency as well. Then there’s the optimized stack consisting of Apache, NGINX, MySQL/MariaDB, all of which combine to produce a supersonic hosting environment.

You can read more about how Cloudways drastically improves uptime through one of their clients’ success stories here.

Setting Up Your Visual Composer Site On Cloudways

Setting up on Cloudways is quite an intuitive process - launching your website is just a question of a few clicks. After selecting your cloud provider, you get to configure your server. Cloudways helps in this regard by suggesting a server size that would be able to handle your hosting needs based on your anticipated page view numbers. Or you can straight up specify your specifications in terms of bandwidth, RAM, processors, and storage.

We’ll show you the process of setting up your Visual Composer site on Cloudways, and we’ll also take you through the manual installation if that’s what you prefer.

Why Doesn’t Cloudways Use cPanel?

That Cloudways doesn’t use cPanel might come as a disappointment to some users, but to be honest, we found its control panel to be a cut above. Yes, cPanel is a popular tool for both first-time and professional users. But it’s a clunky tool - a visual mess that’s hard to navigate. Multiple aspects of its functionality are outdated, and the Cloudways control panel easily eclipses those.

For instance, cPanel does not offer in-built server monitoring tools. Instead, cPanel users have to purchase tools like MycPAdmin to secure their servers or download free services such as Munin. Cloudways, on the other hand, offers ready server monitoring. Since this is a fully managed hosting provider service, you don’t have to worry about the hassles of server operation at all.

We’ve also run into our share of speed, functionality, and security issues with cPanel. Its limited usage has often caused hosting lags, particularly if you start to go over their limit. In fact, it’s almost too easy to get kicked off the service if your usage is too high. And the end-user is responsible for installing a firewall, configuring SSL, and actively looking out for malware plugins that target cPanel security. All of these are non-issues for Cloudways whose dedicated resources allow for much faster hosting, and have integrated security at all levels of the platform.

Then there are the automatic backup limitations. While cPanel’s Dedicated Hosting and VPS plans do allow for automatic backups, the same does not hold true for all versions of the hosting service. And users with Reseller or Shared accounts cannot use their cPanel interface to automatically restore a full backup; they instead have to submit tickets to cPanel’s Support department. This is very much in contrast to Cloudways’ more modern control panel – with this, you’re just a few clicks away from setting up automatic backups.

Plus, cPanel is sadly bereft of WP-CLI, which makes it so much easier for WordPress users to accomplish tasks like taking database backups and upgrades and managing numerous WordPress plugins, making it quite the nifty service. Utilizing WP-CLI on cPanel involves a difficult multi-stage installation process first. And it’s entirely possible that WP-CLI does not function with your WordPress install if a theme or plugin is conflicting with the load process. Cloudways, on the other hand, has WP-CLI pre-installed, thus negating the problem of conflicts with themes or other plugins on your site. Cloudways even has additional resources to help you get started, so you can manage WordPress plugins easily using WP-CLI.

For the TL;DR version, Cloudways easily scores above cPanel in terms of visual layout, ease of use, and advanced features.

Customize Your Cloud Hosting Plan

Perhaps what we liked best about Cloudways was the flexibility and choice it offers in terms of cloud hosting servers. They offer you a choice between five of the very best providers: DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform. And it’s quite easy to move from one cloud provider to another, so if you realize down the line that Vultr’s the one for you, you can move to it from any of the others. That said, performance on each cloud doesn’t differ much, thanks to the overlaying Cloudways infrastructure.

Cloudways also offers pay-as-you-go rates, as mentioned earlier. What this means is that there are no restrictions on the number of websites you want to host, or installations, or traffic. You can scale as you like according to your requirements, and you’ll only pay for what you’ve consumed.

Cloudways hosting pricing plans

Cloudways vs the Competition

Cloudways faces some pretty stiff competition in the hosting industry. Managed hosting providers like Kinsta, Siteground and WPEngine offer some excellent services as well and have their fair share of loyal fans. Of course, depending on your requirements and preferences, you might find one of those providers better. But we found Cloudways offers more value and better services for your Visual Composer website.

Hosting poll on Visual Composer Facebook Community

In fact, Cloudways consistently outperforms all three of the providers we mentioned in terms of ease of use, quality of support, and ease of setup, according to G2.com. It offers more choices of hosting providers, much more affordable rates across the board, and better scalability.

We found there are considerable performance gaps between Cloudways and the rest. Kinsta offers less control over your site and servers. Siteground has a reputation for not being able to handle larger websites. On the starter plan, Cloudways offers 1TB of bandwidth, and WPEngine only 50GB. Of course, all these hosting providers have their own competitive edges. But on the whole, we’d recommend Cloudways first to our Visual Composer users.

Verdict

Count us converts. We’re won over by the performance of WordPress and Visual Composer sites on Cloudways, and by how it hands easy to control for web creators to save time and work more efficiently. Their customer service is excellent, and their speed and uptime are unrivaled. Their scaling mantra lets you grow your website as you need, and the server management is a breeze, as is the setup process. If you’re in the market for a hosting provider, you can’t go wrong with this.

Media file is one of the most basic elements of every website on the internet today. Because the majority of websites that have been published today all have at least a few touches of media elements in their designs and developments.

Some website's main focuses are even based upon these media sharing, selling, and processing, an example of such a website would be a Photography website, Digital studio website, etc.

Therefore it is very important to have a website with a well-developed media library management section in other to keep the library in a nice manner of arrangement for easy access and sorting. Unfortunately, the default WordPress media library section is quite underdeveloped. It does not have options for media grouping, nice file sorting, easy drag and drop features, etc.

That is why we need to implement another tool for this purpose.

FileBird WordPress Media Management Plugin

The WordPress plugin that we would be using is a FileBird WordPress media library folders plugin. It gives you the ability to arrange your media files in a well-organized folder(s) inside the WordPress dashboard. It has a beautiful interface that allows both right-click functions, easy access to browsing and inserting media files to pages/posts/product plus drag and drop abilities.

First of all, you should note that there are two versions of this plugin, the free and premium. The basic difference between these two is that the free version allows you to create up to 10 folders only, while the pro version allows you to create unlimited folders. You can get FileBird Lite free version from the WordPress repository and the FileBird Pro version from CodeCanyon.

After determining which one of these versions is suitable for you, you can install and activate it just like you'd install any other WordPress plugin.

How To Create Folders In The Library

After activating successfully, under the 'Media' tab, click on 'Library' to access and see the plugin options. The library will now show different elements/options for adding new folders, delete folders, rename folders, file, and folder sorting options, etc.

How To Create A New Folder

You can create folders easily and add media files to the folders to have a nice organization. But note that the folders created are not real folders that could reflect in the website root directory, rather they are virtual folders which are meant for organizational purpose only. So regardless of what folder you add a media item to, the file structure/URL will not be altered.

To create folders, simply click on 'New folder', then give it a name. The cool thing is that the naming process supports the use of special characters and spacing.

You can right-click on a folder to see all the available right-click actions possible (such as a new folder, rename a folder, cut, paste, and delete). You can also create subfolders by clicking on a folder and then 'New folder'. Or create a subfolder by dragging the main folder on top of another folder. The dragged folder now becomes the subfolder.

Notice 3 vertical dots at the upper left section of the library opens up the option to 'Bulk Select' folders. This can be used to perform an action of delete.

How To Organize Media Files In The Library

To start adding new files, just click on 'Add new'. There is a dropdown that will allow you to choose a FileBird's created folder you wish to have your file uploads automatically go into. Then you can now use either the 'Select Files' option or drag and drop files from your computer to add the media files.

How To Upload Files To A Folder

Notice the first two default folders in the folder sections. 'All Files' displays all the media files on the website, but 'Uncategorized' show media files that have not been added to any folder, from any of these two default folders.

You can move files one by one or in 'Bulk Select' mode by dragging and dropping them to a specific folder that you want. You can also move files around from one folder or subfolder to another folder or subfolder.

Bulk Select Function

How To Sort Files And Folders

FileBird allows you to sort folders and files. The icon to toggle this setting is located beside the three vertical dots, it is represented with alphabets A and Z.

When this icon is clicked, it shows two tabs 'Sort Folders' and 'Sort Files', and an option to 'reset' the sort settings. The folder sorting could be either in ascending order or descending order of alphabets. But the file sorting option allows you to sort either in ascending or descending order of Name, Date, Modification, and Author.

It is also possible to manually sort folders by dragging and dropping or by cutting and pasting method.

How To Create An Image Gallery In Gutenberg Editor

Creating an image gallery is a FileBird setting that works with Gutenberg block editor only for now. This gallery feature is being developed with more options, settings, and different editor compatibility. So right with Gutenberg editor, you could create an image gallery to display multiple images in blocks of defined columns, captions, and cropping options. This works in both pages and posts.

How To Insert Media Files Into Pages/Posts

In order to insert media files into posts and pages, edit an existing post or page, or create a new one. Depending on your type of post editor, click on the appropriate area for selecting media files.

There are two ways to add media files to your posts or pages. The first option is to upload media files directly into the page by selecting the file from your computer. Or you can choose the media files from the existing files in the media library.

Insert Media Files Into Pages/Posts

If the first option is to be used, FileBird gives you the ability to select an already created folder category first and then upload the file from your computer that automatically goes into that selected category. By clicking on the 'Select' button, it would insert the media file into your page while also adding it to the selected folder which would start reflecting inside the library.

If the second option is to be used, FileBird also gives you the ability to select files to upload from the list of dropdown folder categories that are already created in your library area. Thus clicking on the 'Select' button will insert the media file into your post.

Conclusion

Hope this article has helped you to understand how to organize the WordPress media library folders and has also given you some insights about FileBird! If you like this article, don't forget to comment.

JavaScript improves WordPress pages and posts’ functionality. If you need to show third-party services on WordPress pages and posts, you will need to embed JavaScript (hereafter "JS") for the said purpose.

By default, WordPress doesn't allow entering JS code in pages and posts. For this purpose, you can make use of the WordPress widgets. Another option is to go for a WordPress plugin that lets you add custom JavaScript to your site without altering the source code.

Imagine: you can increase your site's functionality by entering JS into pages and posts by installing a single WordPress plugin: Visual Composer Website Builder.

Why Add JavaScript Into WordPress Pages And Posts?

 1. As JavaScript is a client-side scripting language, the WordPress pages can serve features with ease, speed, and accuracy. By client-scripting language, we mean the execution of JS code in the browser. On the other hand, the code or script that runs on the server costs time and resources.
 2. Implementing JS on WordPress is easy. To get started, all you need is the code and a WordPress plugin, like Visual Composer.
 3. JS provides extended functionality. With third-party scripts, you can write and use JS codes to improve a page's functionality and security.
 4. Using JS extends your WordPress theme's features. As WordPress templates contain source code files, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the use of JS provides a competitive advantage.

How To Add JavaScript To WordPress Pages And Posts?

The process of adding JS to WordPress pages and posts consists of installing a WordPress plugin. Once completed, the process leads to creating JS code snippets in the plugin and adding them to WordPress pages and posts. Each code snippet is referred to by its shortcode, that you can insert into WordPress content.

So, let's proceed to the WordPress Plugins Directory to find the Visual Composer plugin so you can add JS to the whole WordPress site, a specific page, or post.

First, download the WordPress plugin file and upload it to your site. Alternatively, use the Add New Plugin feature in the WordPress dashboard. You can see the said option in the Plugins menu.

Step 1: Install The Required Plugin

To add JS to WordPress pages and posts, you need to install the Visual Composer Website Builder plugin.

Visual Composer In WordPress

Click on the Add New option in the Plugins menu. Don't forget to activate the plugin after installation.

Step 2: Find Javascript Editor Under The Visual Composer Dashboard

Upon activation, you're good to go for inserting JS code snippet into your entire site, particular page/post, or element.

JavaScript Editor In The Visual Composer Dashboard

Once the plugin is activated, find it in your WordPress Admin Panel to open up the Visual Composer Dashboard and access Global CSS, HTML & Javascript editor.

How To Add JavaScript To The Whole WordPress Site (Including Headers & Footers)

After you click on the Global CSS, HTML & Javascript editor, you can add custom Javascript (CSS, HTML) to the whole website. Simply put, it will load on every page of your WordPress website.

Also, the Visual Composer plugin allows you to add JS scripts for your site's header and footer.

How To Insert JavaScript Into WordPress Pages/Posts

If you want to apply custom Javascript to the particular page or post, it can be more convenient to use a local (page-specific) inserting option. You can access it straight from the Visual Composer FrontEnd Editor - a true WYSIWYG live editor that represents how your content will look after you publish it.

By adding a custom JS code snippet locally, you specify what page or post your code will affect.

Wrapping Up

The process of adding JavaScript is daunting without using a plugin. Fortunately, the Visual Composer for the said purpose plays well. Plus, it's free.

The plugin helps you add JS code snippets to your entire site or specific page/post to extend the functionality of your WordPress site or theme's features.

How To Modify Your WordPress CSS Styles https://visualcomposer.com/blog/wordpress-css-styles/ https://visualcomposer.com/blog/wordpress-css-styles/#comments Mon, 31 Aug 2020 08:25:22 +0000 http://t.visualcomposer.com/?p=30116 Learn how to find Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and backup your style.css file in WordPress.

The post How To Modify Your WordPress CSS Styles appeared first on Visual Composer Website Builder.

]]>

In website development, coding files generate the look of a website.

Among coding files, some form the structure of the pages, while others define the styles of elements on your page.

Today, we'll have a look at CSS or Cascading Style Sheet files that define the style of a webpage. These files are responsible for making things look better in Internet browsers. In WordPress, you can find the style.css file in the Themes folder.

The style.css file contains the CSS code snippets that affect the look of your site’s pages. If you need to change the look of your WordPress site, you may need to find the respective sections in the style.css file.

Now let’s proceed to know about the CSS.

Note: Before making any changes, we recommend backing up your site, so there wouldn't be any issues later on if something breaks.

What Is CSS?

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is the language that defines the style of HTML documents. For elements on the pages, you can create CSS styles that define the position, structure, and presentation of the elements. An example of the CSS styles would be:

p {
 color: red;
 text-align: center;
}

In Content Management Systems like WordPress, CSS styles are controlled by theme files. That means you don’t have to code styles separately.

On the other hand, in manual website development, you may need to create styles separately.

Find And Edit WordPress CSS Styles

Once you configure WordPress and proceed to install your theme, you don’t have to deal with CSS.

Every WordPress theme contains its style.css file. You can find one in the /wp-content/themes/themename/ folder. In this article, we will use the Visual Composer Starter Theme as an example.

The CSS file in a WordPress theme defines the style, structure, and colors of a WordPress website. However, if you want to change the code snippets in the styles, you will need to alter CSS via the WordPress Dashboard.

Step 1

Login to WordPress dashboard and proceed to click on the Theme Editor in the Appearance menu.

Theme Editor In WordPress

Step 2

The next page shows your theme’s style.css file, along with an editor that lets you edit the CSS code.

Visual Composer Starter Theme

Step 3

On the same page, you can see a list of your theme’s code files. If you need to alter a file, you can click on the one you like and edit the code in the Editor.

Step 4

After you make necessary changes in the CSS, click on Update File at the end to save changes.

Finding CSS Styles

In the WordPress dashboard editor, you can see your site’s style.css file for making changes.

Basic Information About Your WordPress Theme

The following list contains essential sections in a WordPress style.css file.

 • Typography: This section includes configuration on your site’s font styles, size, and colors.
 • Header: The top section of your WordPress site is referred to as the Header. Usually, it contains the menu bar and logo.
 • Posts: This section controls the way your site’s titles, fonts, colors, and size information are displayed.
 • Sidebar: The CSS section that holds information about your site’s sidebar. You can change the code to make necessary changes to your site’s sidebar.

Precautions When Editing The WordPress Style.css File

 • Before you proceed to edit your WordPress’ style.css file, make sure to back it up first.
 • While editing the style.css file, take proper notes of the sections you edit, including opening and closing brackets and results in the browser.
 • It is recommended to edit your style.css file locally on your computer. For this, you may need to install a local server on your computer and make the necessary changes to your site. Once you finalize your site’s style.css file, you can upload the updated style.css file to your hosting account.
 • Use Chrome’s Inspect option to find the exact style sections on the web pages. Once you identify the sections, you can search your site’s style.css file for the sections and make necessary changes.

Conclusion

If you focus on the style.css file, you can get a list of your site’s theme CSS styles.

With that in hand, Chrome’s Inspect feature helps you find the style sections on your site’s pages. Proceed and make necessary changes, and see the results on the spot.

If, for example, you don’t prefer editing the style.css file, you can choose a lightweight theme while building your WordPress site.

To get more out of your theme, bundle it with a free WordPress drag and drop visual editor to customize how your site’s content will show on the pages.
